Flower-of-Sands enjoys an idyllic yet somewhat restless life on the Marleeseen planet Paradise when Seraphina, the planet’s Supreme Elder, arrives with an astonishing invitation: to become part of a diplomatic mission to the Andromeda galaxy. The quest will be hosted by the inhabitants of Liberty Primary, an advanced civilisation in the Large Magellanic Cloud. It will involve people from Earth, the Rann (a policing military race from the fringes of Rayneard’s Globular Cluster) and the diplomatic school of the Summa-El, a super-advanced, god-like race from an unspecified region of the cosmos. There are questions. Is the invitation a request for help, cultural expansion, or something else? Is a technically advanced, aggressive race invading the local galactic group? And who are the Graces, an ethereal, fifth-dimensional race occupying intergalactic space? A seriously intergalactic and characterful adventure into the beyond.

Earth 2885: A deep space mission to the far reaches of the solar system has lost contact with Earth. Dr Venetia Woods, astrophysicist and leading authority on the outer solar system, has been asked to head the science team in a follow-up, rescue mission. Years earlier, she had been passed over for the first mission, despite it using her calculations and route proposals, and she still bears the psychological scars of that rejection. Now, together with her friend Arabella – an ethereal being from the Triangulum galaxy – she transfers to Neptune’s moon Triton where preparations for the mission are underway. Soon they will join the crew on the giant spaceship, Revival, (moored in the vicinity of Neptune) and begin a journey which will take them deep into the Kuiper belt and beyond. They will visit the dwarf moons Makemake and Sedna, trek through an area known as the scattered disk, and onwards towards the Oort cloud, where, finally, science and physics will break down, and they will find themselves in an unexpected, magical and dangerous universe.

Following her sojourn on Earth, Flower-of-Sands returns to her home planet Liberty Primary in the Large Magellanic Cloud – presided over by the Galactic Confederacy of Liberated Worlds – when a fault develops in her spaceship's intergalactic drive, and she stays in stasis for over eight hundred years. She awakens to a futuristic, ultra-advanced society dominated by a sentient technology called the Field, which meets all individual desires effortlessly, but has lost the very concept of adventure.
An essential requirement for membership of the Galactic Confederacy of Liberated Worlds is a thousand years of absence from war and crime. Earth has applied for membership and, for the most part, fulfils these requirements. But a string of strange disappearances harbingers a return to war and crime and throws doubt on Earth’s suitability for membership.
Aware of Flower-of-Sand's craving for action, Liberty's authorities give her the task of investigating these disappearances. The Field reveals that the trail leads beyond the Milky Way and the Large Magellanic Cloud to the M33, the Spinning Wheel Galaxy.
At last Flower-of-Sands has the adventure she craves, but there is a price. To follow the mysterious trail, she must first obtain the deep intergalactic drives left to the Confederacy by a great race from a distant expanse of the cosmos.
